About Us

The Houston Saengerbund is the oldest musical Society in the city.

Our History

Promoting German culture through music since 1883.

The Houston Saengerbund traces its roots to 1847 with the formation of a German Quartette Society in Houston and was officially established on October 6, 1883.

The club’s early years were marked by frequent relocations, but it thrived as a cultural hub for German immigrants, offering a men’s chorus, orchestra, and theater group. By the early 20th century, membership surged but declined after World War I. In the 1920s, the Saengerbund acquired Milby Hall, hosting concerts, dances, and other activities, but later moved to Feagan Street, where it remained for 70 years. A three-day celebration marked its 75th anniversary in 1958, and it continued hosting events for its 100th, 110th, and 120th anniversaries. In 2004, the Feagan property was sold due to rising costs, and the club found a new home at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 2022, it purchased the former Heights Christian Church, establishing a permanent base. Today, the Saengerbund performs at various festivals and collaborates with other organizations to promote German culture, fostering a sense of community and tradition in Houston.

Weihnachtkonzert 2024

A Magical Night of Holiday Harmony

In December 2024, Houston Saengerbund’s Weihnachtkonzert brought holiday magic to life with a heartwarming evening of music, tradition, and community spirit. Our choirs filled the hall with beloved German and English Christmas carols, from the gentle beauty of “Stille Nacht” to joyful audience sing-alongs. Guests were treated to festive treats, warm Glühwein, and a wonderful evening of music! The audience lit up the room with excitement, and families gathered for photos beneath twinkling lights. This treasured tradition returns in 2025—don’t miss the chance to create holiday memories with us again this season!

Oktoberfest at St. John the Divine

Oktoberfest 2024 at St. John the Divine – German Festivity at Its Finest

In Fall 2024, we partnered with St. John the Divine for a lively outdoor Oktoberfest celebration that brought a taste of Germany to the heart of Houston. Guests enjoyed bratwurst hot off the grill, soft pretzels, and authentic German beer while our singers and musicians filled the air with classic tunes. Traditional folk dancing, kid-friendly games, and a joyful community vibe made it a festival for all ages.

Oktoberfest at the Houston Saengerbund

Oktoberfest 2024 at the Houston Saengerbund – A True Taste of Tradition

Our signature Oktoberfest at the Saengerhalle in 2024 was a festive highlight of the season, combining old-world charm with Houston hospitality. Guests packed the hall to enjoy live performances by our choirs and traditional German bands, with plenty of room to sing along, dance, and toast the day away. Long tables were lined with schnitzel, sauerkraut, desserts, and—of course—plenty of imported and local brews. It was a sell-out event that had people asking for more—and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for an even bigger celebration this year!
