Liederabend

A contest for the support, development and preservation of German Singing.

Limited to young adults aged 21-30.
Repertoire from opera, oratorio, German operetta, Lieder or folk song
will be presented at the finals in a concert on January 20, 2018 at 7:30 PM
at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1311 Holman St., Houston, Texas 77004.

August 1 and November 15, 2017

Rules of competition

  1. Singers must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 30 on January 20, 2018.
    Entrants will provide proof of age at the time of the preliminary audition.
  2. Participants may not be under professional artist management.
  3. Participants must not have performed a leading role with a professional opera company.
  4. There is a $15 entry fee payable via credit/debit/PayPal at the time the application is submitted.
  5. For the preliminary audition singers should perform a 2-minute excerpt from one of the selections listed in item #9.
    Standard repertoire is recommended. The selection must be accompanied. No unaccompanied selections will be considered.
  6. Singers will be evaluated on vocal quality, German diction, showmanship, and the strength of the selections.
    The quality of the recording is also of critical importance.
  7. Semi-finalists will be notified by December 1. All documents are due by December 10, 2017.
    Include photo, resume, proof of age, signed publicity release, and softcopy of the full text of your selections.
  8. The semi-final round will be conducted on Friday, January 19, 2018 beginning at 2:30 PM.
  9. For the semi-final round, singers should be prepared to sing three selections:
    1. A German Lied from the standard repertoire.
    2. A selection in German from opera, oratorio or operetta.
      This selection can be a German translation from a work by a non-German composer.
    3. A third selection from any source, sung in German.
  10. For the semi-final round, singers may bring their own accompanists.
  11. If selected for the Final Concert, singers will appear in formal concert dress.
    Men: tuxedos. Women: formal gowns.
  12. A professional accompanist will be provided for the Final Concert.
  13. Singers selected for the final concert shall agree to appear in promotional materials for the competition.
  14. Housing will be provided for out-of-town finalists.
  15. Video entries should be sent to germansinging2018@gmail.com. Deadline: November 15, 2017.
  16. All finalists will receive a cash award, ranging from $400 to $2000.
